Funerals & Celebrations of Life — Frequently Asked Questions

When someone dies, there are often many decisions to make in a short time. You may know exactly what kind of farewell you want, or you may have no idea where to begin.

Here are some answers to questions families often have.

Do we need to belong to a church to have you preside at a funeral?

Not at all. I work with individuals and families from a variety of religious backgrounds, as well as those who have no religious affiliation.

You don't need to belong to a congregation or follow a particular tradition to have a meaningful farewell.

Can we have a religious funeral even if our loved one wasn't a church member?

Yes. We can include prayers, Scripture, hymns, blessings, and other elements of Christian tradition if they are meaningful to you.

We can also create a ceremony that includes some religious elements without following a traditional church service.

Do you conduct non-religious funerals and celebrations of life?

Absolutely. A meaningful farewell doesn't have to be religious.

We can focus on the person's life, relationships, accomplishments, humour, values, and the memories they leave behind.

What's the difference between a funeral, a memorial service, and a celebration of life?

A funeral is generally held in connection with the care and disposition of the deceased, often with the body or cremated remains present.

A memorial service usually takes place without the body present and may be held at a later date.

A celebration of life often places particular emphasis on remembering the person's personality, relationships, and experiences.

These aren't rigid categories. What matters is creating a gathering that feels appropriate for the person being remembered and those who loved them.

Can you help us plan the ceremony?

Yes. You don't need to have everything figured out before contacting me.

We'll talk about the person you're remembering, the people who will be attending, and what you'd like the gathering to accomplish.

I can help with the ceremony's structure, readings, music, tributes, and other meaningful elements.

Can you help write or deliver a eulogy?

Yes. Not everyone feels comfortable writing or speaking at a funeral, especially while grieving.

I can help gather memories and stories, shape them into a tribute, or deliver a eulogy on the family's behalf.

If family members or friends would prefer to speak themselves, I'm happy to help incorporate their contributions into the ceremony.

Can family members and friends participate?

Of course. Family and friends may wish to offer readings, share memories, provide music, or participate in other ways.

And if no one feels able to speak publicly, that's perfectly fine too. There is no obligation to perform your grief in front of others.

Do we have to use the funeral home's officiant?

No. Families can generally choose their own funeral presider, whether the gathering is held at a funeral home, a cemetery, a community venue, or another suitable location.

If you're working with a funeral director, I can coordinate with them to help everything run smoothly.

Can you preside at a graveside service or an interment of ashes?

Yes. A graveside gathering or the interment of cremated remains can include readings, prayers, personal memories, blessings, or other elements that are meaningful to the family.

These ceremonies can be simple and intimate or part of a larger remembrance.

What if our family members have different religious beliefs?

That's not unusual, and it doesn't have to prevent us from creating a ceremony that brings people together.

We'll discuss the wishes of the deceased, where known, and the needs of the people involved. My role is to help find an approach that respects those differences.

How quickly can you arrange a funeral?

Funerals sometimes need to be arranged within just a few days. I understand that and will do my best to accommodate your timeline.

Contact me with the proposed date, time, and location, and I'll let you know my availability.

How much do your services cost?

Fees depend on the type of ceremony, preparation involved, location, and any additional services requested.

I'll explain the arrangements and provide a clear quote before we proceed.

Can we plan our own funeral or celebration of life in advance?

Yes. Planning ahead gives you an opportunity to express your wishes and make decisions about the kind of farewell you'd like.

We can discuss the elements that matter to you and prepare a ceremony outline that can be shared with your loved ones.
